Celebrate Lunar New Year in Sonoma County
Also called Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year is celebrated in many regions, including Sonoma County, with activities and parades to welcome the coming spring and ward off bad spirits in the year ahead.
Celebrations often include fireworks, loud gongs, beating drums, clashing cymbals, and teams of dancers dressed as lions and dragons. During this multi-day event, people also gather to share a meal, honor ancestors, and gift younger relatives auspicious red envelopes stuffed with money. It’s also customary to “sweep the grounds” — otherwise known as “spring cleaning” — to tidy up the home and make room for good luck in the year ahead.
